I can still scarcely believe it. I live in Central New York and we’ve got a foot and a half of snow AND we get a winter CSA share. Back in our corner of MA I couldn’t even find a summer CSA less than a 45 minute drive and now we can walk to pick up our winter share. (insert me rubbing my eyes in disbelief).
Mr. Stone went and picked up our box today and I was delighted to find a box chuck full of cabbage, radishes, beets, carrots, potatoes, squash, kale and a bag of navy beans all from local farms. We had a dinner party and all I had to do was pick up a few supplemental ingredients from the co-op and our impressive menu was good to go.
Here is what our share looked like in the box, out of the box, and how it made us feel:

Today was a really exciting day! The morning started out normal enough until I realized it was election day which immediately prompted me to not only start dancing around my kitchen but also to get dressed immediately. And all this before 9 am!
The morning was full of high energy as I started to explain to my four year old what it meant to vote and answer a gazillion adorable questions about presidents, elections and such. Who knew a four year old would be so interested in politics! Before we knew it lunch was over and walked to the corner to meet some friends so we could all walk to our neighborhood polling place together.
It was almost impossible to deny to Obama fever and we even had a neighbor joke that she voted for McCain. Although, not a democrat Obama had my vote so I was feeling pretty hopeful; especially after we walked by this:

As we pointed out “Obama” to the boys my son asked a very insightful question with his voice full of confusion, “Are we voting for a pumpkin mom?” Ah, the inner workings of a child’s mind never cease to entertain and remind me of the power of perspective. We entered the school gym and I nervously asked to be reminded how to work the incredibly outdated polling machine fully equipped with an automatic closing curtain circa 1962. I sent the boy ahead to snap this picture and as you can tell he was very well aware at the serious nature of our task. We were making history!
I recently heard the Council of 13 Indigenous Grandmothers Speak and they emphasized and encouraged women to gather in council. I have spent the last few weeks reflecting on this idea and miraculously I found myself sitting in a circle with seven women this past weekend. We brought our children, an upbeat vibe, conscious intention and of course lots of great food and drink.
After our children were in bed we sat in a circle and brought our treasures to sit in the middle with a lit candle and a jeweled treasure box. We all wrote intentions on a slip of paper and went around the circle offering our intentions and receiving the groups support. We sang songs, swapped jokes and took turns checking on the sleeping children. It was tribal living in modern form and my soul rejoiced at being able to participate. It was such a relief to have such a strong group of women to share chores, childcare and most importantly to share our joy!
I think participating in a women’s circle is important work. Renewing the soul of a mother passes spiritual nourishment to her children. Thank you my wise women for such a wonderful and uplifting weekend.
